The Ohio Coaching and Mentoring Network (OCAM) was honored with the 2021 ADAPAO Organization of the Year Award, recognizing an agency, coalition, board, business or other entity for exemplary efforts in advancing ADAPAO’s mission of employing the power of dialogue, education, networking, and advocacy to amplify a united voice for effective prevention in Ohio.

The Ohio Coaching and Mentoring Network is a statewide entity, funded by OhioMHAS and coordinated by PreventionFIRST!, providing capacity-building and workforce development for prevention. OCAM was created out of the Strategic Prevention Framework-Partnerships for Success initiative, a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration supporting state-level approaches to increasing the capacity of prevention systems and communities to address substance use prevention priorities.

That goal is accomplished through training, technical assistance, and mentoring of prevention professionals. Hundreds of Ohio prevention professionals, educators, community stakeholders, and other prevention advocates have participated in an OCAM-sponsored training or regional collaborative session in the last few years. Newer prevention professionals can receive assistance from an OCAM coach to navigate the prevention credentialing system.

OCAM partners with multiple entities on these workforce development efforts, from the Ohio National Guard to the UMADAOP Federation to ADAPAO. An example of that collaboration: High schoolers in Akron City Schools are currently receiving prevention education from OCAM coaches as they participate in an innovative opportunity to prepare students to pursue a prevention career through gaining prevention education and volunteer or work experience before graduation.

While OhioMHAS and PreventionFIRST! lead The Ohio Coaching and Mentoring Network, its cadre of coaches are also integral to its success. The OCAM coaches are a skilled, diverse team of some of Ohio’s leading prevention professionals whose dedication to our profession manifests in the exemplary coaching, mentoring, and education they provide.

The OCAM Network could have simply checked all the boxes dictated by the SAMHSA funding. But, as we know, Ohio’s prevention community likes to overachieve. Because of support of OhioMHAS and PreventionFIRST!, and the excellence of its coaches and mentors, OCAM has become an integral part of our state’s prevention system, aligning with ADAPAO’s mission to reinforce our collective voice for prevention. ADAPAO is proud to recognize the Ohio Coaching and Mentoring Network with the 2021 ADAPAO Organization of the Year Award.
